Getting to Santiago

By Plane

The Santiago international airport is called Comodoro Arturo Merino Benitez (SCL), but commonly referred to as Aeropuerto Pudahuel. The airport is located about 30 minutes/17 km from midtown Santiago. More than 17 international airlines offer flights from North and South America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Upon arrival, passengers staying for less than 90 days will be provided a Tourist Card by the international Police.  This card should not be lost as it must be returned when leaving the country.  The card will also be required to apply for the lodging tax exemption.  

Airport to venue

The easiest way to get to the hotel is by airport shuttle or official airport taxis (blue colored).  It costs less than 30USD and take about 30 minutes depending on traffic.  To make sure that you are getting an official airport taxi, go to the 'Taxi Oficial'/Shuttle Booths immediately after customs and prior to exiting arrivals, or you may pre-arrange your transfer.

Transportation In and Around Santiago

Metro/Bus

Santiago offers both Metro and Bus transportation.  The Metro has 6 lines that will cover all areas of Santiago.  The Buses complement the Metro transport system.  One thing to note, on the bus the stops are not announced to be sure to pay attention to where you need to hop off.

Both the Metro and Bus use Bip Cards.  Bip cards cost 1,550clp. The minimum charge is 750clp, which will give you one trip.

Taxi and Ride Share

Taxis are identified by their black exteriors and yellow roofs.  Prior to riding in a taxi, ask the estimated fare and ensure there is a meter in plain site as they can be questionable.  Be careful to distinguish a taxi rather than a 'colectivos'.  A 'colectivos' is a shared taxi with a fixed route, they are also black but do not have a yellow roof.

Uber/Cabify can be used as reliable alternatives to yellow rood taxis

Currency

The official currency of Chile is the Chilean Peso (CLP).  Banknotes are offered in denominations of 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000, 20,000 pesos.  You will be able to find coins in denominations of 10, 50, 100, 500 pesos.  $1 USD is roughly equivalent to 806 Pesos.

Electricity

The standard voltage in Chile is 220 V, 50 Hz.  The outlets accommodate type C (two round pins) and type L (three round pins) plugs.

Time Zone

During CCSD Chile will be in summer time.  Santiago is in UTC-3 hours  (+1 hours from CST and +3 hours from PST) and is referred to as Chile Standard Time.

Weather

July lies in the winter in Santiago.  Temperatures will range from highs of  15ºC (60ºF) to lows of 2ºC (36ºF).  Days will be stating to get longer and chances of rain will be decreasing.  Santiago is considered a Mediterranean climate.

Language

The official Language of Chile is Spanish.  There are also a few indigenous languages such as Mapudungun, Quechua, Aymara and Rapa Nui.
