Scoliosis Research Society Announces Recipients for the Lifetime Achievement Awards
Milwaukee, WI (September 19, 2019) – During the 54th SRS Annual Meeting held in Montreal, Canada, September 18-21, the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) announced recipients for several prestigious awards.
The 2019 SRS Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Juergen Harms, MD and Alberto L. Ponte, MD. The SRS Lifetime Achievement Award will honor an SRS member for distinguished service to the Society as well as significant contributions to spinal deformity care.
Juergen Harms, MD has made many scientific and clinical contributions to the field of spinal deformity. Dr. Harms developed several different spinal implants (polyaxial screw, Harms titanium mesh, C2 prosthesis, and cervical polyaxial screws and rod); developed many surgical techniques; and taught countless surgeons about spine surgery and spine biomechanics. He has long served as a great teacher and mentor in the spinal deformity community.
Alberto Ponte, MD has long been a giant in the field of spinal deformity having established the first spine ward in Italy, where he performed the surgical techniques that he learned from his many SRS mentors. In 1987 he presented the Ponte Osteotomy, a technique that revolutionized the treatment of thoracic hyperkyphosis by shortening the posterior column of the spine.
The Scoliosis Research Society is a non-profit, professional organization, made up of physicians and allied health personnel. Our primary focus is on providing continuing medical education for health care professionals and on funding/supporting research in spinal deformities. Founded in 1966, SRS has gained recognition as the world's premier spine deformity society. Please visit www.srs.org for further information.
