I am very honored and humbled to become the 53rd president of the Scoliosis Research Society.

I remember as a resident seeing how valued this society has been to its members and the patients we serve, and how important it was to me to contribute in ways so that I might be selected to be a member. It is incredible how much the SRS has grown and expanded since that time, becoming the internationally recognized source for education and research for spine deformity care.

That growth has allowed us to widen our offerings and expand our outreach worldwide. As we return to fewer travel restrictions, we will be restoring and refining our educational programs to ensure that they continue to be valued by all who care for patients with spinal conditions, particularly when spine deformity can be corrected or avoided. We will continue our efforts to increase diversity and inclusiveness for our membership and attendees, including gender, race, nationality, specialty of training, age of patients, practice setting and background, while continuing to improve the quality of education and research that so exemplifies the SRS.

As we have become a larger and greater society, we also expand our engagement of members in the volunteer work that is the foundation upon which we thrive. Helping our members develop leadership skills, both within our society and for their home institutions, will be rewarding for them as well as improve the future of SRS. We are planning programs to enhance these skills, tapping on the experience of our current and past leaders, related societies as well as our industry partners.

I would be remiss if I did not remind us that Lori Karol’s tragic illness and passing did not allow her to become the first woman president of the SRS. Her contributions, leadership, her joy of life and generosity, continue to be missed by all of us fortunate enough to have known her.

I look forward to working and learning from all of you. Thank for the privilege and opportunity to serve as your president.
