NEWS RELEASE: Scoliosis Research Society Traveling Fellowship Resumes

Scoliosis Research Society resumes the Traveling Fellowship program after a two-year hiatus due to COVID.

This year the fellows are USA bound from South Korea, the Netherlands and Spain, traveling to multiple centers to observe some of the doctors on the cutting edge of research in the scoliosis field. And the public is invited along on the journey on our SRS official social media channels on Facebook and Instagram. The fellows will be posting stories of their journey over the next few weeks. Follow hashtag #SRSTravelingFellows.

The tour kicks off in San Diego. Stops include Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital in Dallas, Texas, a 100-year-old establishment that was opened to care for children with polio.

The trio also travels to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for a stop at Shriner’s Hospital for Children to observe a vertebral body tethering surgery (VBT). VBT is still relatively new to the scoliosis field. The first tethering device was approved for use in surgery in 2019.

At the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, they will observe one of the latest techniques in the field, 7D Navigation. According to the National Library of Medicine, “7D Surgical System is the first machine vision navigation system designed for spine surgery.”

Their last stop in the US is at Och Spine --at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York. The trip culminates in Stockholm, Sweden for the SRS 57th Annual Meeting.

This annual traveling fellowship award alternates between North American fellows (US, Canada, and Mexico) which visit centers in Europe/Asia and international fellows which visit centers in North America. To learn more about this program, visit our website.
