Scoliosis Research Society Announces Recipients for the Lifetime Achievement Awards
Milwaukee, WI (September 14, 2020) – During the 55th SRS Annual Meeting held virtually, the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) announced recipients for several prestigious awards.
The 2020 SRS Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Jean Dubousset, MD and Stuart L. Weinstein, MD. The SRS Lifetime Achievement Award will honor an SRS member for distinguished service to the Society as well as significant contributions to spinal deformity care.
Jean Dubousset has been significant influencer to the spinal deformity field since his early days in practice. He has not only presented new research on numerous occasions, but is often adding to meeting content through his brilliant commentary. Perhaps one of his most notable contributions was the creation of the Cotrel-Dubousset instrument system, which allowed correction of the spine in three dimensions.
“This early ingenious development was followed by amazing clinical and basic science contributions to our field…His ability to work with world class scientists is demonstrated by his work with Nobel Laureate, Professor Georges Charpak in developing the EOS spinal surgery imaging system, whch has become a world standard in economically developed countries, allowing scoliosis imaging with minimal radiation dosage.” – Dennis R. Wenger, MD
Stuart L. Weinstein, MD is noted for the tremendous impact his work has had on the current understanding of scoliosis. He has been a tireless educator and mentor, dedicating much of his time to global spine education, training many of the world leaders in spine deformity. Outside of his educational efforts, his impact on advancing the clinical science of spine deformity has been immense.
"His studies on natural history of AIS are landmarks, spanning multiple reports and reaching to 50 year follow up of untreated curves. A feat like this will never be matched… His BrAIST study is similarly influential. By showing that bracing altered the natural history of AIS, he has led the resurgence of conservative treatment for this disorder.” – Paul D. Sponseller, MD, MBA
