Historian Corner

Jay Shapiro, MD
SRS Historian Elect

As we enter the third decade of the twenty first century, it is a good time to reflect on the achievements of our peers and predecessors from the twentieth century. The SRS historical timeline can be found in the History and Archives section of the SRS website. Just click on the link at the bottom of any page.

1970’s

In 1970, during a SRS business meeting, Dr. William F. Donaldson introduced Dr. John D. King to talk about his recent fellowship, the first completed and in essence the beginning of fellowship training in spine surgery.

In 1971 Dr. Less Nash presented a study on blood pressure and evoked potentials in cats which led to the clinical use of spinal cord monitoring (somatosensory evoked-potentials).

Please visit the website to see the other monumental advancements from the 1970’s.

In the near future the Historical Committee will be asking members for help in continuing to build and expand the historical timeline. Please think about getting involved to help preserve and remember our history and advancements that we all use every day to help our patients.
