The Education Resource Committee (ERC) is coming off a very productive 2020-21 year and is now revamping our efforts for 2022! Currently, all content from the SRS E-Text has been revised by SRS members and is in the process of being uploaded into the 10 core curriculum domains on the ERC website.

Research Grant Committee

The research grant committee received nine letter of interests for the newly created SRS directed research grant from Europe, North America, and Asian countries. The scope of SRS directed research is the long-term outcomes of operative and/or non-operative treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis followed into adulthood.

Ever wonder what research is supported by the Scoliosis Research Society, and what we have learned from it? The Research Program and Oversight Committee, or “RPOC”, is charged with answering these questions and with raising awareness of the “return on investment” of SRS-funded research.

Global Education on Spine Deformity Committee

The GESD Committee recently completed a successful return to an in-person Hands-On Course in Nijmegen, Netherlands in October, chaired by Ahmet Alanay and Marinus de Kleuver; a virtual Worldwide Course session with the Egyptian Spine Association in November; as well as its first-ever virtual Current Concepts in Spine Deformity course, chaired by Ahmet Alanay and Kota Watanabe and programmed by the CCSD Subcommittee, which ends in December.

The Hands-On Course brought together a mixture of international SRS faculty and 30 learners for skills training at Radboud University Medical Center where nine hours were spent in the cadaver lab with lots of direct access to faculty feedback and guidance. Learners also got to hear the faculties speak on a variety of conditions and techniques that affect the spine. The end of November also ended the 2021 scheduled Worldwide Courses with the completion of a virtual WWC session. For those in attendance to that session, the feedback provided was “will help surgeons to assess their cases in a different way, which may help them in making better decisions for their patients” (Samer Samy, Session Chair.) This is exactly the SRS mission in action.

The virtual Global CCSD was delivered in three parts as part of an experimental iteration of these traditionally regional course offerings. Since the first Current Concepts Course in 2017, the subcommittee has worked over the years to refine the Core Curriculum-based program while pushing the envelope regarding format. The CCSD Subcommittee thanks the almost 60 SRS members who provided recorded lectures that span the Core Curriculum. This lecture library will change the delivery of information for future courses and offerings as SRS considers blended learning formats that keep us on pace with current and future educational trends while also expanding our reach to those not able to join at in-person meetings. Part two of the virtual CCSD spotlighted four subject matter experts speaking on VBT, ASD, AIS, and MIS. Recordings are available for all to watch. Finally, the course concluded with small-group case discussion that challenged course registrants to develop treatment plans on various real-life cases presented by faculty.

The last quarter of 2021 has brought about a lot of activity from the Global Education in Spine Deformity committee, and we look forward to all the educational opportunities scheduled for 2022.
